Improperly cleaned nails can trap bacteria, fungus, and product buildup, which can lead to infections for the client and callbacks (or worse, complaints) for the technician. Clean nails also allow polish, gel, and acrylic products to adhere properly, so your work lasts longer and looks better. Every step matters — from sanitizing your tools to how you handle the cuticle and nail bed.
Step-by-Step: How to Clean Nails the Professional Way
1. Sanitize Your Tools and Hands First
Before you even touch a client’s hand, wash your own hands and disinfect all tools — nippers, files, pushers — using an EPA-registered disinfectant. This isn’t optional; it’s a Washington State licensing requirement and a core habit we drill into every student from day one.
2. Remove Old Polish Completely
Use a non-acetone or acetone-based remover (depending on the product on the nail) and a lint-free wipe. Make sure every trace of old polish is gone, including near the cuticle line, where residue tends to hide.
3. Trim and Shape the Nails
Trim nails to the desired length using sanitized clippers, then shape with a file. Always file in one direction to avoid weakening the nail edge and causing splits or peeling.
4. Soak and Soften
Soak the hands in warm, soapy water for a few minutes. This softens the cuticles and any built-up debris, making the next steps easier and gentler on the client’s skin.
5. Clean Under the Free Edge
Using a soft nail brush, gently scrub underneath the nail tip to remove dirt, lotion residue, or product buildup. This step is easy to skip but essential — it’s often where the most bacteria hides.
6. Push Back (Don’t Cut) the Cuticles
Gently push back the cuticle with a wooden or metal pusher. We teach students to avoid aggressively cutting healthy cuticle tissue, since the cuticle acts as a natural barrier against infection. Only remove excess, dead skin — never live tissue.
7. Buff and Finish
Lightly buff the nail surface to smooth ridges and remove shine, which also helps polish or gel adhere better. Finish with a cuticle oil or moisturizer to nourish the skin.
How to Keep Nails Healthy Between Appointments
Great nail care doesn’t stop when the client leaves the chair. Part of being a trusted nail technician is educating clients on how to maintain their nails at home. Here’s what we recommend sharing:
- Moisturize daily. Cuticle oil or hand cream keeps nails from becoming brittle and prevents cracking.
- Avoid biting or picking. This damages the nail bed and can introduce bacteria.

- Give nails a breather. Constant gel or acrylic application without breaks can thin natural nails.
