Arriving in a new country with everything to learn
When Fatima first arrived in the United States, she describes the experience the way many immigrants do: everything felt unfamiliar, overwhelming, and difficult. A new language. A new system. A new life to build from the ground up — without the safety net of family nearby, without the comfort of a place that already felt like home.
She looked for a beauty school in Seattle and finally enrolled at Seattle Beauty Academy to build a career. What she didn’t know yet was that she was also about to find a community.
“To me, my teachers were not only instructors,” she wrote, “but also the very first mentors I had when I arrived in the United States.”
What dedication really looks like
Ask most people what makes a great teacher, and they’ll talk about knowledge, patience, communication. All of that matters. But Fatima noticed something rarer.
She noticed what her instructors did when no one required them to do anything at all.
There were students who had no car and didn’t know the way to the testing center on exam day. Their instructor drove them — waking up at four or five in the morning to make sure no one missed their opportunity. Not because it was in the job description. Because it was the right thing to do, and someone decided to do it.
There were students going through difficult times — unemployed, struggling financially, far from the people who would normally show up for them. Their instructor cooked meals and invited everyone to sit down and eat together. A small gesture that meant something enormous to people who were feeling very far from home.
“These acts may seem small to some people,” Fatima writes. “But for those of us living far from home, they meant warmth, kindness, and humanity that we will never forget.”
She’s right that they might seem small. She’s also right that they aren’t.
The highest scores in the Washington state — and a beauty school that feels like family

“During holidays, there were always meals and small gatherings mixed in with our studies,”
Fatima says. “Those moments made people like us — living far away from home — feel cared for, supported, and a little less lonely in a foreign country.”
The day she held her diploma
Graduation day arrived. Fatima held her diploma in her hands.

She was happy — genuinely, deeply happy — because she had completed the first important step in her new journey. A Washington State license. A career to build. A future that was now fully hers to shape.
And she was also sad.
“I also felt sad knowing that I would no longer see my teachers every day.”
